Native to Europe this plant is now considered an invasive species in the US.

The plant prefers calm waters and can grow in depths up to twelve feet.

Thin rough leaves resemble plumes with small teeth on the edges curling downward.

Growing in dense clusters it has highly branched stems.

Stems fragment easily and grow new plants.  Seeds are also produced in large numbers.

Plants form dense islands that choke out all other plants and limit water usage.
